Jayne Mansfield


Time for a Hollywood history lesson! Jayne Mansfield was a famous movie/TV/theatre actor from the US. As if that wasn’t enough, she was also a night club entertainer and vocalist. Her 1st breakthrough came thanks to the perfectly-cast role of starlet Rita Marlowe in the Broadway adaptation of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?. Jayne managed to follow up on her breakthrough with her first “true” dramatic role in Louis W. Kellman-produced The Burglar (1957). Even though the public was clearly skeptical at the time, Jayne proved all the naysayers wrong: she really did have some serious acting chops.
With her raw and realistic turn in The Wayward Bus (1957), the “bimbo” attempted to shed the blonde bombshell/sex symbol image. All she wanted is to be taken seriously as an actor. Jayne’s success continued with great performances in both Kiss Them for Me (1957) and The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw (1958). Throughout the ‘60s, the demand for large-boobed and airheaded bimbos seemingly diminished and this blonde’s entire career started to decline. She managed to regain some of the popularity after becoming the 1st mainstream US actress to appear naked on the screen in the otherwise forgettable Promises! Promises! (1963). Four short years later, Jayne starred in her very last motion picture (A Guide for the Married Man). Her life ended in a New Orleans car accident after her vehicle crashed into the rear end of an eighteen-wheeler.
As sad it might seem, Jayne will forever be remembered as a “dollar store” version of Marilyn Monroe. Her sexual appeal hinged on blond hair, hourglass figure, constant “accidental” wardrobe malfunctions, husky baby talk, and perceived dumbness. Even though everything about her seems tacky nowadays, she was very popular with men in her heyday. She’s been involved with many famous and/or powerful men, namely: John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, Nelson Sardelli, and Mickey Hargitay.
